  Library Journal Review

No one can deny the enormous impact of Latino pop culture in this country. And with the Latino population still the fastest-growing segment of U.S. society, a solid reference on the subject is essential for all libraries. This two-volume work goes beyond providing entries on such predictable names as Desi Arnez, Gloria Estefan, and Ricky Martin to cover all facets of Latino pop culture, including sports, fashion, literature, festivities, and more.   CHOICE Review

The paucity of current reference material on Mexican American, Puerto Rican, and Cuban American topics makes almost every new title welcome. This set covers Latino popular culture in history, literature, and sports; media, film, and art; and music, ethnomusicology, and folklore. Among the most impressive and best researched pieces are some longer entries on music topics (e.g., salsa and cumbia) and most entries on Mexican American topics. The set includes many useful biographical profiles. But reference works must meet the highest standards of accuracy, however broad they may be in scope. This work boasts an impressive advisory board, but nothing beyond institutional affiliation is provided about contributors. Like many reference works with multiple contributors, the quality of entries ranges from superb and scholarly to dubious or inadequate. The entry "Food and Cookery" describes at length 13 Mesoamerican dishes, but it confines "favorites of the Antilles" to two alcoholic drinks and little else. Recommended readings that follow entries range from thorough lists of appropriate, scholarly sources to ephemeral Web pages and inadequate sources. For Cuban American actor Andy Garcia, readers are referred only to a 1987 movie review by Roger Ebert. There are some outright errors: the repeated misspelling of boricua (a label meaning "Puerto Rican") is inexcusable in a reference work on Latinos. Readers are not likely to know the difference between the authoritative information this work includes and that which is seriously flawed. ^BSumming Up: Not recommended. S. A. Summary
"The wide range of entries with many areas of unique coverage will meet the high demand for multidisciplinary use. Students and other readers will appreciate the inclusiveness of cultural groups, the gender sensitivity, and the heavy contextual grounding of the topics." "The Latino population is the fastest-growing segment of U.S. society, and this encyclopedia is the first to focus on the breadth of Latino cultural expression. The up-to-date entries and authoritative information provided by a host of subject experts make this the source to turn to for quick reference and research. Numerous photos complement the text."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved
